This thing is going to do the swan vesta challenge soon :?

Got a loom of Rhz on the XR forum, but it's an 90 spec one. So I had to make some wires up for the key connections.

then spend 2 hrs trying to get it to start.

Still no joy!!!

Tried lots of things. I  need to build a TFI loom as I am still not convinced the dizzy is working. I may also check it's timed.

I did get a couple of fires but not anything better...

On a plus point. it now has a MK2 door on it Wink  photo later.

I had a few hours spare today. So I got the door cleaned up.

And spend another 3 hours trying to start her.

I repaird the loom the other night, removing the DCU wiring and checking it over.

With that refitted , I checked the static timing was at 12d BTDC which it was more or less.

Hooked everythign up and still no start, and ocasionaly chug but not a lot else. I tried a differetnt cap, rotor, leads. I tried swapped the leads round a bit. Checked the Lead order. Changed the Dizzy. Tried a different coil..   Getting a bit pished off now. There seems to be spark, fuel and compression. So either the plugs got damp durign the testing ( now cleaned and baked.) or there is still a timing issue.

anyway..

Cleaned up that back door..

Oh and I binned the Viscous pice of crap too..

You say you have fuel but have you checked the fuel pressure?

Not got a guage, but the plugs were wet with fuel.

Got new plugs on the way and I am going to pull the cam cover off and fully confirm that the engine is on the compression stroke when at TDC on #1 ...

OHHHH YES......  Cheesy

Took of the Drivers turbo Inlet and oil feed, and cam cover, confirmed #1 inlet was closing before #1 plug lined up.

Put in the new plugs.

Adjusted the static timing

Refitted Camcover, Oil feed and inlet pipe.

Put all the leads back on.

Turned the key and she just turned over and over..  :?  :?

And splishuted and splashaterd and cagugard and fired up Cheesy

And Ran!!!!

With a noise like DEATH  Sad

Not particualy smooth and a leakey exhaust, but she ran and reved ..

With a noise like DEATH  Sad

Just near the drivers turbo region..

Switched off.

Filled with water.

Tried again, started 1st time.

With a noise like DEATH  Sad

So I got my Engineers Stethascope out ( 20CM 1/2" Extension ), Ear to the turbo.. A Faint noise like death.... Ear to the PAS pump and I can feel the vibrations in my skull...

So she runs, seems a bit smokey, probably needs timed up and set up. Has a nackerd PAS pump and the steering shaft may bee goosed or the rack too..

But I am well happy..

Drover her 3 yards back up the drive Cheesy

Well My MK1 golf project has been fully disposed of,

I could not get Gwen to start, so pulled the plugs again. I also had a check on how far in the AFM's were turned...

Turned out they were out 12 3/4 turns!!! The spare pair I had were 3.5 turns. I think they were so far out the ECU decided they were BOGUS and overfueld.

So with them set up at 3.5 she seems to run a bit better and stinks less..

When roughly refitiing this time I also transposed Plugs 4&5 so that's sorted.

I need to reset and lock the timing off.

I have also fitted a spare PAS pump and it sounds a bit quieter...

And connected the charge lamp, whcih still glows  If you have ever treied to do an alternator on a 12V you will know it's a pain... On a turbo car it's a right ARSE!!!

So a few steps forward...

Trial fitted the replacement front bumper, the old one was missing both main front mounts and sagging.

Looks a lot better already Smiley

Also removed the drivers seat last week in preperation for new black carpet, once the passenger one is out I can lift the old carpet and asses the extent of the rust Smiley
